I bet there was a war there and someone used a whole lot of anti-matter which basically blew up a star system. XD

lol.

I bet we will never hear of this again in our life time. Something new and exciting is found, they tell us about it once, then it is never heard from again.

We could hear about it again if it makes a good story (cue Spielberg). ;)

I have a feeling that they just found the epicenter of the big bang. Just a guess though.

Perhaps, that would certainly explain it if there isn't black matter to cause the void to be refilled (explosion -> implosion).

Exactly, Ford.

LOL on Lou Bot.

Maybe that's just it... maybe there's actually a TON of matter in there, and it's just dark matter!

Wait... no.... if there was a billion light year-wide mass of dark matter right there, we'd definitely be able to see the gravitational effects...

...and maybe they did just find the Big Bang center. This could be fun...

the question now is:

Will it blend?

This is the first time I've ever seen the phrase "gaping hole" used in a scientific context. ^_^

Pretty interesting stuff, though.

LOL, McFly, try to filter your mind and think strictly scientifically only. ;)

We know this physics rule by heart: "For every action, there is a reaction."

Now new theory: "For every big bang, there will be a big hole."

;)

That's a bangin' hole they got there.

McFly, I'm rolling my eyes at you. :P

Big bang epicenter... though a giant hole left by a war on a galactic scale seems more like a Michael Bay than a Steven Spielberg. ;)

Michael Bay then. It is a reasonable conclusion to me except one thing is missing...the debris. If all the matter were converted to energy, the place should be a hot spot and not a cold spot. Then again, in their little picture, there is more than one void. If the voids were caused by explosions, nearby voids should be disfigured and imbalanced. Perhaps there isn't a void at all and the detection method is flawed or we are missing something altogether.

Given our level of understanding of the universe... I would bet this is the most likely case. :D

It isn't a hole it is a void.
