Nvidia drivers issue with Vista - help!

Hi everyone.

As we know, all good posts begin with the specs:

Intel Q6600
XFX 8800 Ultra
XFX 680 LT mobo
Spinpoint 500GB
OCZ 700W PSU
Iiyama 431S monitor 17" 1280x1024
Vista Ultimate edition

Here's the issue. Everything works perfectly until I install Video drivers (166.22 WHQL presently but have tried several different types with the same result). Then:

1) On reboot, display goes black (no video signal) just after Windows loading bar (i.e. after video drivers are loaded). If I unplug the DVI lead from the video card for a moment then plug it back in the video signal is restored and the display comes on. But:

2) I cannot select the correct resolution for the monitor. Using the basic VGA driver (pre Nvidia driver install) I have no problem selecting 1280x1024 (or higher) but the maximum I can get with the Nvidia drivers is 1024x768. Attempting to upgrade the monitor driver to the one supplied by Iiyama has Vista telling me that the best driver is already installed.

I have battled with this for days. If I install XP instead of Vista everything works perfectly so I am sure it's not a hardware issue. I've done some searching on the Internet and found some people with very similar issues, but no solutions. Interestingly enough, I installed my own copy of Vista onto my Desktop PC (currently running XP) and had exactly the same problem, even though that PC has a different spec (X2 4600, 2x7800GTX in SLI, Asus A8N Premium etc).

If it were up to me I'd just stick to XP, but I'm building this for someone else so that's not an option. Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks as always in advance.

Regards,

Chris McNally

Erm when you run windows update, and you dont have any drivers installed, it comes up with a Nvidia driver download, have u tried using that one? i think its a slightly old version but it may work.

also dont forget to use driver cleaner to remove all the drivers you've tried to install.

also have u tried any of the adapted drivers from uguru?

Systems specs:

Intel Core 2 QUAD LGA775 Q6600 G0 @ 2.80GHz
Gigabyte P35-DQ6
2GB Corsair XMS2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel
BFG 8800 GTX OC 768mb Ram - (600MHz Core Clock) (1800MHz Memory Clock) (1400MHz Shader Clock)
Vista 32bit

Thanks for the reply Mohawk.

It's been so long since I started playing with this that to be honest I can't remember if I tried the drivers from Windows Update - I think I did but can't be sure at this stage. I always use Driver Cleaner in safe mode between installs so that's not the issue, and I've tried a shedload of drivers from Guru3D but all with the same result.

I've got a couple of things I can still try but I'm going to take a break and have a few beers first....

I've been using the 162.22's since they've been out and to me, they are the best drivers
to date. I've had the best performance from the drivers since any were released for
the G80's. All the 163's have gave me a performance drop.

I've not read all your thread, but what happens when you revert back to the previous,
or indeed install one of the 163's?

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

The only driver which works on a DVI connection is the basic one which ships with Vista. Any other driver just causes the blank screen issue. I did, however, get it working on the VGA connection which my monitor happens to have.

I'm waiting to get some feedback from the owner on whether or not it worked with his monitor's DVI connection - I'm thinking it may be an incompatibility with my (admittedly old) TFT.

Chris,

You didn't say if you were running x32 or x64 of Vista.
On x32 I'm running NVIDIA Driver version 7.15.11.6344 (as reported by Device Manager), with none of the issues listed.
Oh and by the way, the driver is listed as not digitally signed, so I had to permit it to get it to load.

Thanks Gerritt. It's the 32 bit version. I think 163.44 was one of the many driver versions I tried, but being a game sort of chap I'll give them a try and let you know how I get on.

any monitor drivers? i know my viewsonic one has drivers that help out with clarity and things. anychance it could just be a faulty graphics card?

Systems specs:

Intel Core 2 QUAD LGA775 Q6600 G0 @ 2.80GHz
Gigabyte P35-DQ6
2GB Corsair XMS2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel
BFG 8800 GTX OC 768mb Ram - (600MHz Core Clock) (1800MHz Memory Clock) (1400MHz Shader Clock)
Vista 32bit

Graphics card works fine with XP and my 7800's are fine too. Attempting to install the Iiyama monitor driver results in Vista telling me "The best drivers are already installed" or words to that effect, with no option to install them anyway.
