Hello

My laptop computer usually recieves a limted connection when it connects to the linksys router. The laptop is set up to connect automatically when windows starts and it automatically creates an ip address. When the connection is good it has a 192.168.2.100 ip address with a gateway of 192.168.2.1

When the connection is limited it receives an ip address starting with 169 which is a private ip address and will not work.

I tried give the laptop a static ip address and it will connect but the internet will sometimes not work. The static ip address i put is this 192.168.2.100 and a gateway of 192.168.2.1.

Can anyone give me tips on what should i do to avoid the limited connection issue.

Thank you.

some wireless cards have issues connectiong to those routers, There isnt much you can do about it other than to change the router. if you pop the power on and off you will be able to connect.

either change the router or the NIC, its as good as it gets.

Only read the manual as a last resort.

Most routers have a DNS cache/forwarder, so if you put the DNS server to be the same IP as your gateway (192.168.2.1), DNS should work.

When you're using static IPs, make sure to choose an IP outside of the DHCP range (so say ... 192.168.2.50).

It almost sounds like an IP Address conflict, granted with static addresses that doesn't make a ton of sense.
Or something else possibly stupid, have you setup the router to use static addresses, or are you simply lucking out when it works cause that address just happened to run out of lease time. I know that's rather basic but from reading the post I get the idea you haven't been in the router settings.

I had a similar problem with an older PC. Changed the LAN card and *bing* problem solved.
