Yeah. That's right. I bought an AR-15 assault rifle. It's very nice, beautiful, sleek, black... fires .223 calibre ammunition at a maximum effective range of 550 metres (which is ridiculous, really, but... still :D), it has a 16" barrel and it's the most wonderful thing.

Maybe ever.

I loved firing the M-16 when I was at Basic Military Training for the Air Force, the balance of firepower/cost of ammunition/rifle weight/ergonomics make it, in my mind, perfect. It's a blast to fire (no pun intended)... and I made a video of it -- shot in GLORIOUS HD!!!

Feel free to right-click and "Save Target As..."

Enjoy. :)

thing that plagues it is jamming, same with M-4 thats why military was working on the XM8 but that was canned i guess due to not being american made

Nice. What is its twist rate? 1"7 or 1"9?Maximum effectvie range of 550 metres? I don't believe that anyone could shoot a .223 effectively at 550 metres. With 55gr? - I doubt it. 550 metres is too far for a .223. Plus you would need a scope with a power of up to 24 to even have an idea of your target, and it would be ridiculiusly sensitive to the swing unless rested.

The .223 is an awesome round. Cheap and if you can shoot will kill most big game ( apart from elephants etc ). It's also so versatile, you can blast varmints without busting your bank.

American military rifles are all renowned for jamming.

Vietnam was the classic example. Putting an M16 up against an AK47 is silly in a sandy, dirty, rugged environment.

Well, not ALL. But the M-16 was notorious for it in 'Nam. Soldiers used to put their military supplied condoms over the muzzle to stop sand getting in

Thats because we have no serious enemies like you guys do. No country wants to attack us, and we want to wage no war on any country. Our money is spent on better things, such as education and healthcare.

Why spend money on military when it is not needed?

We are only a country of 4 million.

Please also note - we have the best Special Forces ( SAS ) unit in the world and thats fact - look it up.

Steyr Aug is a fantastic weapon - much better than the M 16/M4A1.

Its amazing how similar our countries are!! Roughly the same population, same AR for the military, we dont have much of an air 'force' either. We have a few planes alright, but they're really not much more than training craft.

Also, we have one of the best Special Forces too, the Army Ranger Wing.

Our military is highly trained in general.

Yah. M16/A1/A2/A3/A4. Derived from the Armalite AR-15.

The A4 has a flat top receiver unit originally develped for the M4 Carbine and a handguard with four Picatinny rails ( mounting platform for scopes etc )

The semi autos are just usually referred to as AR-15s.

Its the U.S air force thats mostly still uses the M16A2 and maybe national guards, I can't remember.

New Zealand and Ireland are pretty similar countries - in terms of alcohol consumption and laidback attitude. I want to visit Ireland one day, as my grandparents are from there ( Hence the 'Kieran Blenkarne' )

I'd love to vist New Zealand too, seems like such a beautiful country.

But yeah, we'd get on well with the relaxin' and drinkin' ha ha!

I don't see Barrett sniper rifles or M60 jamming. Barrett makes the best high caliber sniper rifles in the world. We can't forget the M14 as well--perhaps the best combat rifle ever made.

The M-16 jammed, at first, because the military was issuing bullets that, when fired, leave residue in the barrel. The original specs required clean bullets. They then issued cleaning kits to overcome it and not too long thereafter, they got the M16A1 out which fixed most of the jamming issues. It's a well liked weapon because it is substantially lighter than the AK, can carry more ammo (thanks to the smaller caliber), and it is accurate.

Also, one of the main problems with AK47 v M16 was not that the M-16 jammed, but in the forresty / jungle combat areas, the AK's higher calibre bullet was a LOT more lethal. It would easily cut through wood, small tree trunks, branches etc where the smaller calibre of the M16 would disintegrate on impact.
