I was seriuosly thinking of getting one of these BIGFOOT KILLER NIC Network cards for christmas. But I do not know if they are a bit of a gimmick or not, I have googled them but got no good review to make my mind up. I am a serious gamer so if it does what its meant to I would be happy...

Anybody got one or know someone who thinks they are great and does it really make a sufficent difference over on board LAN ports?

I would really like one if got positive feedback.

In my honest opinion it is a scam. Theoretically it will help your CPU because your CPU will no longer have to handle the LAN port and all the incoming/outgoing data, so it could free up some CPU power. The extent in which it does so is so low that it is not worth buying. One would be better off upgrading their CPU then buying a Killer NIC.

I think I'd rather have a PhysX card if I were going to get a peice of "novelty" gaming hardware.

If I where you I'd save my money and wait for the 45nm Quad Cores. They will apparently overclock extremely well.

probably the more intelligent thing to do given your current system config.

Still though an E6600 @ 3.7Ghz is a very fast processor. I'm not saying you have to upgrade, I'm just saying that Killer NICs are a waste of money.

your better off waiting for the second gen 45 quad due to erratta etc, despite the Faster FSB of the 6*50 line of CPUs they have erratta fixed thus makes them slightly faster, but apparently cheaper to make (Second gen tend to be easier to produce)

I see Killer NIC a lot like I see SLI/Crossfire. A Killer NIC is only worth it when you have the best (e.g. a 8800 Ultra) and it is not enough. Essentially, it's for bragging rights more than performance. If 1-5ms means a lot to you, get it but you'll find that almost everything will offer more bang for buck than that.

Haha the Killer NIC.... hmmm... well Plug n Play you have a E6600.
I don't think that's gonna hold you back at all in comparision to wot the NIC boldy
markets. I think you'd be nuts to go out and buy this. I've not read that much about it,
but how can this card possibly increase a users ping when it's a server related
issue?? You go into an empty server, and you've an excellent ping, then someone
else comes in, and then more folk, and then it's a full 32 or 64 game room, and what
happens to the ping? you've went from 45 to 150+ easily - if ur lucky.

On the subject of gimmiks, my Physics Card's done nothing for me really.
I decided to stick with it, and all I've benefited from it, is the nice wee blue light
on the heatsink fan when some game uses the card. Wonderful ! ! ! !
I think deepdown, i took pity on the blue led, which saved the Cards demise from
an RMA. Silly meeeeeee!!!!

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

Well, consider this: A lot of games these days use UDP for packet transmission. UDP has a packet limit of right around 1024 bytes. Your modem is what, 2-4 Mb/s? What is going to beg for mercy first over a swarm of 1024 bytes: your modem or you're state-of-the-art CPU/NIC? The answer should be clear: modem. CPUs croak over flops, not bytes. That's why there is stark contrast between GPU and IGP. Add in cards are to handle something the CPU struggles to deal with. This simply isn't the case with NICs. A gigabit NIC is more than enough for everyone's needs except a server farm.

Nice to see your soft side Tam...would you have down the same if the LED was green? I hope so, otherwise would that make you a colourest? I have no idea what the f im typing, tooooo early in the morning and fatigue is an ugly thing.
I have read up on this bigfoot NIC thing, as I am a CS:S fan, and my ping needs to be below 40 at all times, otherwise I just cant handle it. Call me a purist, a perfectionist, what you will, but there it is. I guess you could call me fairly avid, as my clan was ranked 3rd in Australia, albeit briefly as I disolved it not soon after.
All the reviewers seem to think its a bit of a gimmick considering it's cost and the such. However, from a nerd perspective, it is a VERY interesting bit of kit. Considering it is basically a low powered computer with no display, it is actually pretty cool. It runs a version of linux, and supports some really intense protocols and features. But they all reckon it's a bit of a scam for gaming, but could do well in a server situation.
Personally, I reckon if you really need to spend the cash, then upgrade your internet connection if you can...

Thanks,
John Jiang

I did say i didn't read into it Ford. It's something I tend to steer clear from just now
as I'm renowned for splashing oot on stoopid pointless hardware, so I'm not gonna
read into it. I alreayd bought the fookin Physics Card... I'm not being fooled again!
But thanks for the "yet again" technincal update :P

Maestro, I dunno what i'd do if it was green lol
