In April 2006 I bought a gig of Mushkin ram from fries on a rebate promotion. The company handling the rebate, was status-now dot com. After a lengthy ordeal I ended up writing a couple nasty e-mails to Mushkin about how badly this crap messes up their reputation and reflects badly on them. After several e-mails with an understanding manager, Mushkin actually ended up cutting me the rebate check themselves.

Fast forward to September 2007. I buy 2 gigs of Geil ram from NewEgg. Initially I had to contact status-now as they had entered the wrong promotion number. That issue resolved I began the 8 to 10 week wait.

Last week I e-mailed Newegg and got a yada yada response, and status-now's phone number which isn't listed on the tracking site (your first clue this isn't going to be easy).

Today I called status-now and very impolitely told them this was the start of week 14, and asked them where in the f**k my money was? I was told to watch my language. I explained the Mushkin incident and told them I wasn't going to put up with them dicking around with my cash. The agent looked at my file and said that the manufacturer was reviewing the rebate details. I demanded a land line number to Geil. I then told the guy that if he was making notations to please note in my record that I was very rude and vulgar because I felt his company was a lying f**king POS.

I called Geil and got a customer service agent named Andy. I prefaced the conversation with the events that transpired with Mushkin. I then told him about the current debacle and how Geil was supposed to be reviewing the rebate details.

His response was "WHAT?" I don't think I need to go beyond this point, as I'm sure you can guess the rest. So as per his request I e-mailed all the original forms. He warned me it would be a week or so as a lot of the people are out on Holiday, so... Now the wait continues once again.

Bottom line is download the rebate form before you buy and think twice if the outfit handling the rebate is status-now dot com. As for me I'm busy reposting this on every forum I use. A Happy and Loving New Years wish to all you guys and gals here at HWA

I vote for angryhippy hunting:

See who can find the most places he posts it, kinda like an internet treasure hunt :).

Seriously though, this crap is why I never buy anything that comes with a rebate. If they want to give me money off they can just take it off the price, if they aren't gonna do that then they're just screwing around trying to avoid giving you a good deal.

I've had a lot of rebates processed in less than a month from Newegg but I have never encountered this provider (thank god apparently). Have you notified the store where you bought it from (e.g. Newegg)?

Point noted.

The bummer is it makes both Geil and Newegg look bad. And now I have them both wasting their customer service time dealing with it when these rebate clearing houses are getting paid for exactly that reason. So the retailer and manufacturer don't have to deal with it. The 2 really big bummers is the RAM cost me $94 before the $30 rebate. The same RAM is now $67 before the rebate, so I'm basically stressing out over $3 dollars.

And the other thing is the rebate for the CoolerMaster free after rebate power supply is being handled by...ya you guessed it status-now. But since the $40 before rebate price for that was such a good deal in itself for a good 600W power supply, I'll send it in and see how they do on this one which advertises a 6-8 week turn around instead of 8-10.

I'm starting to think this other outfit that charges $4.95 to guarantee the rebate check within 4 weeks is a better program even though initially I thought getting charged for the rebate was outrageous. And then the obvious thing of my shopping options at Newegg are now limited by a company that has nothing to do with them. The customer service lady at Newegg assured me all my e-mails were being forwarded to upper management, which is really my goal for both Newegg and Geil. I want to make these a-holes at status-now as miserable as I possibly can.

Based on personal experience, I have only received about half of them back. I never buy anything with a MIR unless its a good deal without getting the MIR too.

Unfortunately, I deleted all the rebate forms after I got my money back so I can't list all the places that have got me my money. The only pending one I have right now is from www dot web-rebates dot com for a Samsung monitor. I know I've sent in many rebates for eVGA cards without problems. I'm having difficulty recalling beyond those however. I know I've done a few using www dot rebatetrack dot com without problems.

That's exactly what I do. That way you're happy(ier) with your purchase right away and then if you actually do get the rebate in 2 months it's like bonus money anyway.

Personally, though, I'm convinced the vendors know about and possibly even encourage such behavior. It's in their best interest to *not* pay the rebates, especially if they can blame it on a third party. They keep their full cut and their image doesn't suffer as much as it would if they were handling the rebates directly. It's not hard to imagine a Rebate Dept that acts as a liaison for the vendor and the rebate processor, with quotas and numbers to meet each quarter and the autonomy to turn a blind eye to various "lost rebates."

Don't forget, rebates not only could be troublesome to get your money back, but they also recorded a whole lot of your personal information as you provided in order to get the money. You never know, they may be selling your info for money. For that much trouble, sometimes it's just not worth to go through rebates.

I doubt that's the case. The management guy at Mushkin was in total agreement with me on rebates being a pain in the butt. He says the customer service people have better things to do, like servicing the customers instead of wasting man hours on rebate crap, and was totally hip to the fact that Mushkin is the one who ends up looking bad.

Another e-mail from Newegg and Geil today. The Newegg lady is going to be calling the rebate center again today to find out WTF is going on, and the Geil rep will be handing over all my docs to the sales dept. Wednesday when they come back from Holiday. The interesting thing there, is it's the Sales Department that has to deal with this and not customer service, which makes their participation even more costly as they could be selling instead of dicking around with this petty crap.
