Take the x8800GT if you can. It's a better card than the 8600GT. And it will not be a bottleneck in your system. Your games will play very well. But I would upgrade to Vista at some point. And be sure to have 1GB RAM.

The card will be bottlenecked, but will still be 10x better than the card you had, plus, if you decide to upgrade the rest of your system at some point, the card will still be a decent performer.

I say go for the 8800GT

Hello,

At the moment I have 2gigs of Ram and Windows Vista so the only other thing needed for upgrade is the processor and motherboard.

The thing turning me off the 8800GT is that it is only 256mb, is this ok?

Here is the card in question: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139107

Thank you for your help so far.

despite what people tell you your cpu is a huge bottelneck and will cost you performance dearly. Hell I use to have that CPU with a 6800 ultra and that was a bottleneck. I would still get the 8800 but get a better CPU as fast as possible.

Hell my 6000+ AM2 X2 @ 3.3 Ghz bottelnecks my 8800 GTX KO performance. Cant wait for the AMD quad core 9900,s to come out.

what resolution do you play at???

For games, the biggest bottleneck will always be your video card, never sacrifice a faster card for a faster CPU.

Adam, there is no way that CPU would bottleneck a 6800 class card

Why, exactly??? There are much better CPU's out for over a year........

I agree Adam. My Pentium4 3Ghz bottlenecks my X1950pro. That 3500+ will bottleneck a 8800GT a lot. No chance of playing crysis with that CPU at the levels the 8800GT should do with a C2D.

It really depends on what resolution he'll be playing at. The lower it goes, the more CPU bound you become. The 8800GT will still give a good performance increase whatever CPU he has (within reason :)).

Check out this link regarding bottlenecking on the 8 series:

http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=672&p=0

Anything above 1280 x 1024 and the CPU isn't too much of a factor for most games and even at that resolution the performance benefit from getting a more powerful card more than outweighs any 'bottlenecking' that will take place.

edit: overclocking it to about 2.6GHz wouldn't hurt though :)

thats interesting PCclub here has a good size order on them due to be on the shelves by end of Jan this month. I think you might want to not speak about something your not 100% in the loop on. Is what I do agree on is the name. PCclub calls them the 9900 xeon,s. 2.8 Ghz quad core 3800 Mhz HTT memory supported 1066MHz with overclocking potential of 3.8 Ghz on air. Thats why I bought the AM2+ board.

Xeons (thats Intel )??

3.8 WIth a Phenom on air?? I dont think so..............

I think you're getting a little confused yourself there. 3.8 with Penryn on air sure.

They are callem Phenom, 9900 is the model number, Phenom is the marketing name (like Athlon, Core 2 Duo etc)

They must have that wrong. Xeons are definitely Intel processors.

lol doubt that i expect they will at least hit 3.4 Ghz on air. I have and always will be a AMD fan. There cheaper and offer a good bang for there buck. Boards and CPU,s and GPU,s are cheaper always have been. Hell I be happy with 3.3 Ghz

I've yet to see anything but a really special cpu from AMD hit 3.4 on air. Considering how much of a problem they've been having with these CPU's speed bins, I think you're being a tad bit optimistic.

Sure, it would be great if they did, but I think the highest I've seen in a review so far was about 2.7-2.8 on air, and not stable either.

Sure, its a new stepping, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

Something isn't right there. The 9900s are 2.6GHz, not 2.8GHz and the highest overclocks anybody has had with them was 3GHz (not stable). No way in hell will you hit 3.4 with it.
