Eh....... wow

The 8500 nearly catches a quad core Phenom on some multithreaded / multi core aware benchmarks.

Also, check out the power consumtion under load, E8500 = 33W, X26400+ = 114W

Unbelievable.

Also, they'll be selling for the same price as current 65nm Core 2's

I find that review little strange, as I get better FPS in Crysis than 6400+ in MQ. It is overclocked, then again my RAM is at stock too.

Gaming results are excellent. Quake4, 43FPS better than a x2 6400+, Halflife2, 52FPS better than a x2 6400+, Crysis, 23FPS better than a x2 6400+, World in Conflict, 35FPS better than a x2 6400+

The top dual-core AMD processor, Athlon 64 X2 6400+ that has never looked too good in games, now gets knocked out completely. It falls far behind even the slowest of the Wolfdales.

Not to mention the saving you make on electricity with these new wolfdales using only 33Watts at 100% load. 114Watts for Athlon64 x2 6000+.

AMD is doomed. :(

...

Eh? Wolfdale has 119 more (over a third more) transistors? Weird.

No, say it ain't so! :(

Edit: Nice processors. It's a good thing I bought a cheap E2140. Upgrading should be easy both on the wallet and installation-wise.

cache would make the majority of that transistor count I'd imagine (4Mb - 6MB) as well as SSE4(.1?) and other tweaks to the core

Without a true competitor like AMD, that would almost certainly happen. It's pretty sad to think about, but without AMD, Intel would not be updating it's CPU lineup with faster chips as often as it is now. On top of that, the prices would most likely sky rocket as you say.

AMDs new platform has potential. However, until they fulfill that potential, it will be wasted potential. I hope AMD goes back to basics: sit down, stop wasting money, re-consilidate your finances and get back into R&D. Release something good, or don't release anything at all.

At least they have success with the HD 3000 series. I think. Don't they?

Yes, the HD3xxx series seems to have been a nice hit. They pack a lot of performance for a small price. But on the CPU side of things, what does AMD have to compete against Intel's mid to upper range? Only at the low to low-mid range AMD has any sort of presence in the current CPU market.

Also remember that AMD was far larger than ATI back at the merger in terms of profits. Now the AMD side of profit doesn't exist and all they really have to run on is the tiny bit ATI makes. It's bad news for AMD no matter how you look at it until Bulldog platform at which time, they'll have to answer to Nehalem. AMD has it rough for sure for another year.
