You seem to have alot of blind faith in nvidia, you say 8800gt sli is probably faster than 3870 crossfire. You say probably because you dont know, you seem to meerly assume nvidia is always better. Infact a single 8800GT IS faster than a single 3870, but crossfire 3870 is significantly faster than 8800GT sli and infact crossfire 3850 is onpar with 8800gt SLI. This 3870x2 card is not just a one off like you claim, its a first, as the next gen of ati cards, the 4000 series is entirely dual core with upto 4 or 8 cores on a board for high end cards. Because of this, unlike previous dual core cards this one will be properly supported by drivers and games as its the way of all new ati cards.

I don't know about you, but they look to be roughly the same and each taking advantage in engines geared toward the specific manufacturer.

Also, last time I checked, 7950GX2's had awful price to performance ratios.

i think what makes this card a great card is that it scales very well and the price is just right on it. 400-$450 isnt bad for a card that puts up these kind of numbers and its cheaper than an 8800GT sli setup. and besides who knows how these bad boys will do once actual drivers hit and its ran in a crossfire setup. vulcan is just a hater :P

Sorry guys its like compairing apple and oranges, reading through a few on the benches and I cannot phatom what the hell they are on about,m they say you cannot get maxed out setting of these newer cards, yet I read these reviews/bench test and I can just about see an issue with a 1950Pro card thats running stock. So either everyone else in the world builds systems with issues and I live on a different planet..

I cant seam to find fault on the card I have tried, so I would expect to be far more able with a newer GPU or even crossfire/SLi tech

Most often two lower cards will cost less that a higher card and the lower card will out perform the high spec card.. thats bang for buck.
The ATi offering is good, and so is the Nvidia, but looking at Nvidia and as someone has mentioned, Nvidia is not updating there technologies and trying to tell the T's & G's on the gaming cards is impossible as they simply dont post them, they do for the quadro's which is really odd, but doing the math in a wired fashion the 8800 Ultra is less than 50% of the new quardo.. and about 1/8th the cost.

ATi will not sell more of these dual GPU cards, why would people want to buy them? I think that alot of people have lost faith and the upgrade path isnt looking good at all. Its simple with Nvidia, you know what your buying and then you can buy another card, ATi on the other hard are all over the place and the recent history isnt looking like a backer. where do you upgrade to? I take it that they have the same thing in this gen cross fire where you can match any ATi card against another, which was always a better selling point of the ATi cards unlike Nvidia.

TBH 8 FPS isnt going to make or break a graphics cards, the price, the features and technologies is what is going to make the difference. Would you buy a graphics card that looked more real, but ran your game on high settings at 40FPS or would you buy a graphics cards that looked good (but not as good) with 50 FPS?

Dont forget, were dont really see any difference over 35FPS as to flicker and lagged frames.

I better not write anything here, don't get me started guys. How I put it like this way .. for $400, its a damn good card. Besides it offers far better playback/decode engine.

If "someone" said about power consumption is in "excess" he needs to consider that it a 55nm GPU and at full load single HD 3870 fetches 80-100W at maximum, making it total of 160-200W for HD 3870X2. Since it is a single board, at full load it won't go more than 160-170W. Besides, it is not for laptops.

Not a poor attempt, considering NVIDIA's 7900GX2 attempt..sheezh!

Strange, power consumption benchmark on Tech power up and X-bit labs is completely different. I got 550W hooked up and Watts meter never shows it goes above 200W (at full load) and thats for the complete rig :/

Awesome, it's been awhile since we had a Nvidia/ATI flamewar! Seems like we're back to business as usual:

1) ATI releases a card that should own on paper
2) It makes an excellent, but not dominating, showing in benchmarks, except for a few very odd results (Supreme Commander? wtf?)
3) It's nowhere to be seen in retail channels (yet)
4) Nvidia has a competitor "right around the corner"

It's just like the good old days! :)

Awesome, it's been awhile since we had a Nvidia/ATI flamewar! Seems like we're back to business as usual:

1) ATI releases a card that should own on paper

- It owns in benchmarks too, driver optimizations and "the way it meant to be played" is what holding it back. This has been a problem, now I think AMD/ATI should start 'paying' game developers to stick an advertisement 'The way it meant to be owned' right next to ATI logo and make games 'more' compatible with ATI Architecture.

2) It makes an excellent, but not dominating, showing in benchmarks, except for a few very odd results (Supreme Commander? wtf?)

- If that's so than even 8800Ultra wasn't dominating, domination days are over.

3) It's nowhere to be seen in retail channels (yet)

- It would be another low volume SKU (consider: 7950GX2 | 7800GTX 512MB). Don't expect it to hit the shelves so soon, besides I'm not sure about the availbility and NDA date for 3870 X2, however we did witness 8800GT | 8800GTS (G92) availability too ;)

4) Nvidia has a competitor "right around the corner"
It's just like the good old days! :)

We'll see ;)

Well I stand corrected - Newegg appears to have a few for sale, now, for $449. Props to ATI for actually shipping product!

Well, it gets fairly spanked by GT SLI in pretty much every test here,
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3209&p=1

I suppose its a bit cheaper though. Decent card.

I'll still wait for a decent single DX10 gpu though.

the problem when you talk SLI and crossfire, and cards like this is that they are unstable. they just are. the reason i say probably, is because the technology is still so wonky when it comes to benching. it depends massively on drivers and the games themselves. is 8800GT SLI faster than 3870 crossfire? probably it is. its difficult to get a clear cut answer. i have seen all the tests, and benches. on some tests it looks miles faster, on others it isnt. on balance, its maybe a little faster,

but it comes down to the games you play and at what resolution too even more so that with a single card traditionally. some games like single nvidia cards, but can prefer dual ATI cards. testing two cards is horribly inconsistant, and has been for years.

what still remains here is that this card doesnt appear any faster than bog standard 3870 crossfire, because thats technically what it is anyway on a single card. thats why its just not impressive to me. one of the only real ways this card actually has a point is if you have two of them and go quad GPU. otherwise you get very very similar performance from crossfire 3870, which on balance appears a bit slower than SLI 8800GT to me. so its not really a overall performance victory, its not really an overall pricepoint victory, it still comes with all the render and artifact problems we have come to expect from dual GPU setups, it still comes with the power consumption, it still comes with the situation where in some games theres no gain over a single card. reports are the drivers dont let you configure the card better, like alternate frames, split frame etc which makes the card less useful in games than a configurable crossfire and SLI solution or single (next gen) powerful card would be. i dont see this as being a significant development at all. a sidestep, not a forward step. :/

here we see 8800GT SLI giving crossfire 3870 a battering, http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=716&p=8
but also i acknowledge there are other tests where the 3870's run the SLI setup close.

note the incredibly erratic behaviour of some situations, such as the supreme commander test where the single 8800GT is miles faster than a single 3870, but its slower on the dual card shootout. also how prey standard was faster on the single 3870, but the situation is reversed for the multi GPU tests. i think this reasonably explains my 'probably' remark

For $449, I think its a pretty good deal, and I would certainly consider it, but I'm looking more in the $250 to $300 range maximum. It's nice to see ATI put some strain on Nvidia again, maybe the old days are coming back.

300 pounds, yeah 280 -300.

which also means i would take two 8800GT for about the same money in SLI after seeing this particular test:

http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/13967/1

the 8800GT SLI in this test anyway utterly batters the 3870 X2. probably because the setup is correctly configured, it wouldnt surprise me if half the sites that test these things just drop the cards in and dont play with the drivers to nail the options.

even in the half life 2 episode 2 test, a long time well known ATI favourable engine, the GT SLI setup just mashes the ATI cards including the X2. i can get two GT's for about 305 pounds. even if the X2 is 280, the GT's are worth 25 more. less than ten percent more expensive, but they are much more than ten percent faster there.

plus two 3870's are still only 270. :P
