So i current have router and it runs fine and all but every machine i own can run 1000mb/s. I wanted to know if i bought a gig switch and put it in front of the the 100mb/s router what would happen. would that even be worth while or would all the data run though to the router which would slow down everything. Any ideas comments etc

So is this your planned configuration?

Computer1---,GigabitSwitch----10/100Router----Modem---ISP
computer2---,'
computer3---'

Is your goal to provide the fastest connection for each individual computer to the internet via the modem, or to provide the fastest computer-to-computer intra-net data transfer speeds?

The first question you need to ask yourself, is do you really NEED gigabit intra-net performance? Will it really make a difference as far as the user/s is/are concerned?

edit-add goal to questions. (note: added before I saw OP's first response to this post)

As far as I know, the intra-net gigabit connection will run at the higher speed regardless of the connection speed of the router-to-switch connection. Obviously, data to/from the ISP will be gated by the router, and packets (when they are present) to/from the router directed to a specific computer will be interspersed with packets (when they are present) between the computers.

edit-fixed brain mis-fire
