Western digital is a good brand. Seagate is also a good brand. The high performance hdd are the western digital raptors, but they can be pricey.(seagate bought out maxtor).

On newegg.com you can buy 1tb hdd for just under $100usd. You can get the 1.5tb hdd for about $130

Sata 1&2 are compatable with each other.
If your pc mobo can take sata2, i would try to get sata2 as it may performe a little bit faster.

Im not sure what the largest hdd is that xp or vista will recognise. I only have a 300 gig hdd and both xp and vista will recognise it, with latest service packs.

As far as hdd performance. A typical hdd runs at 7,200 rpm (raptors at 10k rpm). The larger the cache size, the more performance. I would recommend a 16 to 32 mb cache.

This is the best HDD at the moment...it is a absolute STUNNING drive faster then a WD RAPTOR drive...I just ordered two. The only drives quicker are SSD drives and they are very exspensive and small capacity wise at the moment.

You really cant go wrong with this IMHO.

An absolute bargain price aswell.

seagate drives are noisy compared to wd , but have a much better turnaround time for rma .. i know this to be true after sending two "brand new " hard drives back in the space of 2 weeks . oh i nearly forgot - seagate are way generous too , i sent a 16mb cache 500gb sata2 hdd for rma, and they sent me a 32mb one back very quickly - was v impressed

qft ... I RMA'd a 120GB (might have been a 160GB) Seagate drive last year, they sent me back a 250GB. The time from me sending the dead drive to having the new one in my hands was about 10 days.

WD have a really good RMA system. I sent one off to Singapore and had a new one back in 7 days.
I see that some people have recd a larger capacity drive in return, which is not always a blessing if you need an identical size drive for a Raid set up.
