  Error Message

Dell Inspirion 8000 (Notebook).

The following message appears on in black letters on a white screen when booting:

The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified. it may not be completely inserted or may have some other problem. please read and complete the following steps in order:

1. press the device completely and firmly into the bay.
2. press the esc key wait for the system to power down.
3. press pwr button try redetecting the device.

This happened after I started using EDIMAX PCMIA Wireless Lan adaptor. Sometimes I boot up error free on the first attempt but it can sometimes take several reboots (after checking card is firmly in place) before an error free boot.

One thing concerns me: I believe that the PCMIA card is the problem. However a friend who occasionally uses the computer claims the message came up on one occasion when the PCMIA card was not plugged in, so I am reluctant to buy another device just in case the problem is being caused by something else.

Any ideas anyone, please?

Thanks in advance

I would check the pins on the card, making sure they have not been corrupted in any way and that they are clean. Also worth cleaning the pins inside the unit. I use a cut-down matchstick and it is surprising the stuff I have pulled out of these ports.
