KM Jan 27, 2009, 01:42pm EST Report Abuse
I, or actually my girlfriend has a problem. Under Windows 2003 server. Her boss is setting up her and her coworkers to look stupid and inept in his bosses eyes. So he's deleting their notes and putting in his own notes to save his job. I used to work there and I know him to be inept. this is the only way he can save his job. My girlfriend and her coworkers are looking for a way to back up their notes to prove what he's doing. All notes are done in a program which uses MS Word. All faxes emails and prints as well as USB connects are monitored. How can she they back-up their notes without detection by their supervisor? All of them are at risk of being fired and this guy is setting it up He has gotten 2 fired this way so far. His boss thinks he's a hero. I cannot tolerate such evil people but don't know what to do short of making him disappear. I don't want to do that. Please help me. Any additional information needed, let me know and I'll provide it. Not sure what info you need.
Tank you in advance
Kevin

It is simple. Just because they monitor your emails, doesn't mean you can email your backups to another email address. And you can always back them up to USB unless USB is disabled.

But I think if all of them went to the boss and explained the situation, they have the numbers to make it clear.

The best thing for them to do is go to the next level of managment and express their concerns, anything else could put them in a situation where they are violating company comptuer use policy which could get them fired.

Well for starters, you'll need:
- etorphine and syringe
- industrial sabre saw with extra blades
- as**tload of lye
- large ceramic bathtub
- 200-300 sqft of thick plastic sheets
- a nice quiet area where you won't be disturbed

Or, if you're in a hurry:
- a clawhammer

Firstly, what sort of notes are they saving? Secondly, can they prove they're being deleted by the boss?
They could:
A) back up to a USB stick
B) back up to an external hdd which they could secure and encrypt, keeping access passwords to themselves
C) they could burn them to cd's, though if these are word files, you'd be wasting a lot of storage space.
D) they could save them as password protected PDF's and burn those to disk or put on external hdd
E) they should bring the situation to a higher level of management, with proof. I.e screenshots of the time stamps of their files, and then with the files that have replaced them.
F) are any of them system admins? They could access the logs and see their files being replaced by him

So she's fighting 2 levels of management.
Is it really worth it? Maybe consider alternative employment...

Is showing upper management these notes without the crappy manager or whoever knowing you're contacting the upper management? Essentially you could just pull someone from there to look at the files on her computer.

Call a lawyer. Notify business bureau and/or law enforcement authorities. If the manager is deleting / altering documents, i.e. destroying facts and proves, to protect himself and to falsely incriminate employees for the purpose of firing them, it is called Slander. The manager can be liable for civil / criminal charges, as well as the company which endorse his action!

Meanwhile, look for another job. Job with f**ked up management like this, has no value to continue working for. Use your precious time for doing something else or working for someone else better.

Want to add, that's a lot of security there. If your GF's work is highly sensitive, the last thing you want to think about is to defeat their IT security. You, and your GF can get into trouble. You could even get people here into trouble for helping you. If indeed what you said is true, like I said before the best is to get legal help and notify proper authorities.

The main security breach is by the boss - which also includes falsifying documents. Should it come to light in court that they circumvented any of the business' security, in order to preserve their own notes / documentation, the company's rules in that case will be disregarded.

This guy needs to be put in his place, and evidence needs to be gathered in order to do so.

I dont think there is anything wrong with wanting to backup your documents, notes in this case. Thats the entire reason for templates in office, so it cannot be changed. Then if she and her friend are indeed fired, they have a record of the note written and the date it was written, which can be compared to the note overwritten by the boss and therefore they can see that the boss was doing something illegal.

Now, if we just knew what type of notes these were :)

Thank you all for your help.

McFly & Plug; Excellent ideas. But if I'm going to do away with someone, it will involve a boat, a wood-chipper and lots of sharks. LOL.

As for the rest of you;
All good help. The information involved is of a very sensitive nature and the boss would be fired for his actions is found out. The legal ramifications are in fact very serious for him. However, they have no way of proving what he is doing. Unless as was said, IT can track his actions.
I have suggested that they go to his boss in numbers, but they're all a bunch of scared single mom's. If they loose this job, they'll be out on the streets in no time. (except for my GF.)
Slander you say? Proof is still the problem.
I have recommended legal recourse, but they're all too scared. (Except my GF of course.)
I'll be pushing her in this direction as I have been.
Getting the documentation is the problem.
I know one of the IT guys. I'll chat with him discreetly.

Again, thank you all. Always nice to get another perspective.

P.S.: The type of notes involve legal issues, cases and medical information. The laws in California involving this are very strict. And the fines and penalties to the company are such that they'd want to keep this very quiet if it was proven. Perhaps the best route is to use that as leverage?
