So, with my new DFI mobo, there is only one PATA connection, which allows for two IDE devices. Unfortunately, I have 2 DVD drives, and 2 PATA Hard Drives. So I needed to get an add-on card.

I picked up a VIA VT6410 card for this purpose, but am having problems with it. It says that it is a RAID controller, but should work as a stand-alone drive controller. However, XP cannot find drivers for it, and I cannot see the drives (they also don't show up in Device Manager). In device manager, there is an icon for two things that don't have proper drivers: Raid Controller, and SM Bus controller.

I have tried installing RAID drivers for the card, but it hasn't worked. It will install, but then XP hangs on boot-up.

Do I need to install something special for this if I want to use it without the RAID function?

You could go with these if you can't get that card to work.

I use them for a quite a few builds and never had a problem with them. Also keeps the case cleaner using Sata cables instead.

Have you tried the drivers for that card from VIA's website?

hope this helps.

Also you could buy these sata dvd writers for $25/s&h. They are noticeably faster then any ide roms i have ever owned.

The only other idea i can think of that wasnt mentioned is to try the card in a different pci slot, though it is doubtful that it will make a difference.

I wish I had seen those before... that's exactly what I had been looking for, but couldn't find before.

I'll give those a shot, thanks!

I should have bought SATA DVD drives years ago when I got the ones that I did. For now, I think I'll try to stick with the ones I have (college costs kinda prohibit spending that kind of money, even though it isn't much), but I'll keep those in mind for the future. Thanks!
Also, if nothing else works, you're right, I should definitely try a different PCI slot... didn't even think about that before.

Thanks, guys... I'll let ya know how it goes.

So, I tried installing those drivers again. I had forgotten that I had tried some drivers from VIA that should have worked earlier, but it froze XP on boot.

Same thing happened with those drivers. It froze on boot, and then after messing around, the "Last known Good configuration" became the same configuration that wouldn't boot up, so it won't let me boot into XP. I'm currently reinstalling XP, and I think I'm going to forget about the Hard Drives and controller card. I might pick up those converters that were suggested, but I'll have to wait till I get some more money.

So for now, I think I'll just live without them.

Thanks for the help, guys!
