You've probably already done this, but my first suspect would be updating RAID drivers. But with a new version motherboard sometimes there are firmware issues. You might check the mobo version and search for any known RAID problems.

edit to add:
I'd also try 2 different drives in the same configs and see if the problem repeats

Thanks for the reply John.

In fact, I have searched the web for someone experiencing similar problems with this motherboard and have found none. Out of the places I have searched I have only found one report of a problem with RAID on this board, and even then their problem was not with write-protection, but rather with boot failure, bsod when drives were in RAID 0.

Will look into a firmware update once I get a chance.

Most of the random write protection issues I have seen have been with USB flash drives, so it looks like I am experiencing a rather obscure problem, luckily I am still pleased with the performance outside of RAID.

Also, looked at reviews of the hard drives in question, many successes with putting them into RAID with very few failures, but I doubted that was the problem from the beginning.

Will take your advice and try it with some other drives when I get the chance.
