Basically unless you plan on compiling (I assume not too much for gaming) or anything of the sort, I'd probably just go with the i3. The 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo on my laptop works well enough for me.

McFly said:
On your MacBook, are the Fn and Ctrl (or Command) keys swapped from their 'normal' position? (normal being Ctrl-Fn, swapped being Fn-Ctrl) How do you get along with that? That's the way Lenovo does their laptops as well, and I'm worried that I won't be able to Ctrl-Tab, Ctrl-Shift-Tab as fast through my Firefox tabs. :(

McFly, you can change what each of those keys do with a little app that comes installed on the Lenovos

Hmm, I always thought so up until checking just now. Oddly, it's actually a P7550; here's a link for the differences.

http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=42014,35569,

Just for the hell of it, I also looked up the differences between the 330m and 520m.

http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=47341,47663,

Unfortunately, I also can't really find if VT-X will will run x64 or not. Are the prices you're coming up with after factoring in an educational discount?

Concerning the FN and Command, it just took me a while to get used to pressing Command while in OS X, but after I got used to it I actually prefer it on the chiclet style keyboard. The technique is to use your left thumb to hold it down, you pivot off of that versus your pinky when cycling through commands.

Yeah, there's no cache or DDR-3 speed difference so between the two I'd say that the 520m is definitely the way to go.

Amusingly, when searching for HWA, this topic comes up as one of the main sub-links on Google.

Whoa! You still buying a laptop? :O

Since you love UT2k4 I noticed your wrote this:
The Intel IGP should be able to handle UT2004 fine.

should is not the same as will. And since UT2k4 is a fps dependant game then be absolutely sure that the igp will run the game with good frames. The thing with Intel's IGP is that they suck so much that no matter i fyou lower quality settings it will still perform the same.

P.S. Get an iPad

I see in your profile you're set on getting the 540M now, why the change?

Ah, alright. I think you'd be fine with the integrated graphics for Compiz, but I'd look for some benchmarks for gaming before you decided on it.

Wow, it's that bad? I have an integrated Radeon HD 3200 on my desktop and it does everything just fine. Hell, I'll even run a 720p movie on a second monitor on occasion (Mon1: 1440x900, Mon2: 1680x1050.

After some searching, looks like the Intel chip bests mine - as it should, mine is ~2 years old now. Still not bounds greater, but whatever, let's just call it "on par."

Intel HD

Oh, and here's the X1200 for comparison. ...Wow, that is balls.

....Anyways, looks like Compiz should run fine, but still can't say anything for games. It runs Project64 and Gunbound just fine though, lol.
