Hey guys...

well... my system is boinked..... sorta.....

Tonight... I walked away for a moment.... later I came back and noticed an exclamation sign down in the task bar over my network icon. Come to find out I have no network. I proceeded to investigate... I tried to browse... nothing. Tried to login into my router, not connecting..... decided to check my other computers, they all have network and can get to the internet. I then decided to reboot my system. Still no network... I decided to reboot my router and cable modem.... still no network..... matter of fact then I notice on my system... No network adapter at all in device manager (im using the lan on MB). hmmm... I have no LAN adapter available.. kinda like it disappeared.... so I then rebooted my system to see if it would load up the adapter... After backup to desktop... NO LAN Adapter... oh... and NO DVD drives, they too are missing...

Other quirks that have developed in all this are......

USB keyboard... del key will not respond to get into bios..... (PS2 keyboard will work)

USB keyboard... once up at desktop... keyboard works including the del key...

Shutting down the system either by the start <shutdown> or hitting the case power button with shutdown Vista..... But will not completely turn OFF system.. it stays powered up.

No matter what I do with both of my ide DVD drives... they will not be recognized by bios nor OS.... there just gone... I have swapped both drives between mstr & slave settings with corresponding ide mstr & slave connector as well..

the hdd LED stays on SOLID.... not suppose to.. It supposed to only come on when hdd or optical are accessed....

I have cleared CMOS several times..... and at one point, my system got into a mode of power on - shut off - power on - shut off - power on - shut off cycles... I was able to clear that and get back to a point where it will stay put.... again.... I cant get into bios using the usb keyboard.. had to resort back to a PS2 keyboard...

its kinda like parts of my system is disabled.... like the onboard network adapter... usb keyboard not recognized at the bios level, both IDE opticals missing which could be the IDE controller being disabled, and whatever controls the function of powering the hardware to the off state when you shutdown your system has been disabled ....

I'm thinking my psu or at least parts of my psu has gone wonkers.... the reason I think this may be it... is that when I start up HW Monitor utility..... it shows some weird voltage readings... -12V shows 0.0, 3.3V shows 0.3x, -5V shows 0.0s, and +12V shows 0.3something..... now I dont remember but either the + or - 12V has always showed wierd readings.... as said cant remember...

PSU is a OCZ 700w Gamer Extreme
MB is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R

The system will boot to desktop and function.... its just that there will be no network adapter (onboard lan), missing DVD drives (there should be two of them), and the system will not power off after doing a shutdown of the system.....

So what you guys think????

Well GG just to give you a heads up. I'm selling my desktop as parts, including my OCZ Evostream 720W PSU. I'm going to make a thread in the next few days after I do a photoshoot for all the components.

if you have a multimeter you could test your psu fairly easly.
there are also psu testers for fairly cheap .. $20 and below

You can either be part of the problem or be part of the solution.

Last night I tested for voltages with my multimeter on one of the 4pin molex leg and I get 4.99V for the red wire and 12.22V for the yellow wire... its the one that connects to both of my optical drive. The thing is... one optical when you hit the eject button, the tray comes out like it supposed to while the other optical, hitting the button... the tray will not come out... like it is dead...

I'm thinking that the voltages on the 24pin to the mb has gone wacked and that is why I am getting no volts in HW Monitor. Later today I need to find out what the pin assignments are on the 24pin and what voltages they are.... then unplug all the connectors, turn on the psu via the green wire and start measuring the 24pin connector to see what I get..

Oh yes... I had to replace the cpu two weeks ago... I checked out the cpu as much as I can and all seems to be well with it.

So at this point it is going to be either the psu or the MB.....

Well....

I pulled out my trusty multimeter so as I can measure the voltages at the mb 24pin connector

Pin assignment - http://pinouts.ru/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml

.... disconnected the 24pin from the mb.... (the only thing connected to the psu are water pump, TEC controller, Fan controller, and gpu... ...

I went and shorted the green (pin 16 - turn on) and black (pin 17 - ground).... NOTHING... Uh Ohhhhhhh.... the psu fan spins slowly, fans connected to the fan controller spins very slowly.... All the LEDs in the psu and fans all flicker.... and the pump is barely running.

Tried a couple of times on/off.... same thing...

Disconnected the TEC controller (uses good amount of power to supply the TECs) and gpu (has two 6pin pwr connector)..... same thing.....

This is after sitting all night with the input ac source disconnect from the psu...

ok... guess i'll be looking around for a quality heavy built psu in my local area... I know if I get it locally, gonna end up paying a premium... guess thats ok... my part of feeding the local economy...

hopefully it is just the psu and not the MB.... and if it is the psu, I hope it didnt take out any components on the way to psu heaven..

well..... im foooookkkkk'd

My psu took the tank....... and took the MB along for the ride....

Today I stopped by a three computer stores checking out psu's... The only psu that came close for my purchase was a Corsair TX850.... but.... I really wanted a Corsair HX850 instead... at least I know where to go locally if I change my mind.

So I came home.....

I do......... have a brand new spare psu... but I really dont want to use it as a permanent component... not in my computer that is..... BUT.... I could use it for testing... The psu I have laying around is a ULTRA LSP 750W... as you can see.... you'll agree with me that i didnt want to use it as a permanent component in my system. But should be able to handle being hooked up and use as a test purpose to check out the rest of the system.

as a reminder..... the original psu, OCZ 700W now does not even turn on.... dead...

So.... I pulled out the old dead psu..... externally hooked up the ULTRA LSP 750W psu to the system.... System fired up and booted to desktop.....

Shit.... all the same symptoms are still present.... NO onboard Lan, NO optical drives, system wont power off after shutdown, and delete key on a usb kyb does not recognize.....

Crap
Crap
Crap.....

Ok..... So...... I called gigabyte... talked with Eddie in Tech Support.. He agrees with me that the MB is toast... He as me to setup an RMA with them....

well.... guess my crap will be down for a bit...

Gonna bring up my system... see if I can get a backup of my important data to another drive just in case...

hopefully I will get a RMA soon after I get the form fill out...

You're in luck G.G. you can RMA your OCZ PSU and they'll ship it for free.

From OCZ website:

OCZ Technology Group offers a 3 or 5 year PowerSwap Warranty on all PSUs

All OCZ Power Supplies feature an exclusive warranty that allows you to "swap out" a defective power supply, without the need to wait on the repair of your defective unit. This eliminates the hassle of return-for-repair loops that other companies put you through, saving you time and ensuring you will receive a 100% hand tested, fully functioning unit as a replacement. Your defective power supply can be returned for replacement at any time within the specified warranty period. All replacements are guaranteed to operate without issue and to full specification. Please view your product page for the most current warranty terms. Recertified power supplies purchased from an authorized reseller carry a one-year warranty.
IMPORTANT NOTE: PowerSwap does not automatically entail a cross-shipment. You must send in your defective product for evaluation with our support staff or setup and advance RMA before we are able to ship a replacement.

The product was properly installed and used in its recommended environment. OCZ Technology shall make the final determination as to the existence and cause of any defect. Under no circumstances will OCZ Technology be liable in any way to any purchaser for any damages, including but not limited to lost revenue, wages, or any other incidental or consequential damages arising out of the use of or inability to use OCZ Technology products.

The following will not be covered by our warranty:
Power supplies physically altered by the end user or that our staff determines were not manufactured by OCZ Technology. Only products that are purchased from authorized resellers will qualify for warranties and service/support. All OCZ Warranties are void for products within or destined to Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria or North Korea. OCZ cannot provide technical support or replacements for those products.

Click here for RMA instructions (http://www.ocztechnology.com/support/customer-faqs/)

Create an RMA ticket (http://www.ocztechnology.com/support)

I've RMA that extact same psu that you have once to OCZ and the process was pretty smooth. They exchanged it for free and paid shipping on their side and it was a speedy service too. I suggest you call them for the RMA since I think the ticket would be faster than emailing back and forth like I did.

Meats,

Great idea..... But..........

I found my receipt..... and..... it's a no go on that one because my psu is "out of Warranty" by 1 month 1 week on a 3yr warranty...

No BFBC2 or Halo for me for several weeks until I get this sorted out.... :/

You can try it anyway, I don't think I remember giving them any receipts. Just call them and do your thing and if they ask for a receipt do that "oh, a receipt?" as innocently as possible. If it goes through then you can use their cross-shipment and be up in no time.

Thanks Guys.... But..............

@ BoT,

great price....... BUT..... that is the same (almost) exact psu that crapped out on me. I have the OCZ Game Extreme... the only difference between mine and the one you showed is that my psu contains a Blue LED fan.... Due to the fact that I am drawing alot of power

According to this PSU calculator -

http://www.coolermaster.com/support/psu_calculator.php

my system with all the junk in it.... requires a minimum psu of 563W...... now I dont know if this figure is loaded or idle....

But on this next psu, I want to get one that is at least 850W 'er to give me plenty of head room.

@ Tommie,

Thanks.... but.... that 1yr warranty for that recertify psu is not going to cut it for me......

I was looking to get either a Corsair TX850W if I had to.... or a Corsair HX850W... the difference between the two is that the HX version is modular and has a 7yr warranty.... TX is a 5yr... 5yr is not bad at all.... the bad news is that the HX is around 50.00 bux higher over the TX... Both psu has a single 70A 12v rail... where as that OCZ has 4 x 20A rails... I'm kinda leaning torwards a single rail system this go around.....

with that said..... i'm considering a Corsair TX950W.... it "only" has a 5yr warranty... and not modular... BUT... it does have a single 75A 12v rail... I rather have this than the OCZ 1010W with 75A spread across 4 rails... This TX950W price (170.00) falls somewhere between the TX850W (150.00) and a HX850W (190.00).

look who made it back from the beach .. =)

man, they had the TX on sale not to long ago.

850w should be plenty, remember that they run optimal at 80% load if they are 80 Plus cert
they loss that optimum if you go to far above or below

You can either be part of the problem or be part of the solution.

BoT,

actually I'm not back from the beach yet.........

according to these tests... the Corsair stays

above 87% at all different load testing....

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/power_supply/corsair_tx850w_atx_psu/4

this one is above 80% at all differnt load testing...

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Sto...p;reid=126

This one shows good showing at 80% load and above...

http://www.overclockersonline.net/reviews/50002731/

I'm pretty confident with the Corsair psu products at this point......

Oh by the way.... just checked my email.... and I got my RMA approval from Gigabyte for my mb.... So I will need to work on the paperwork, pack her up, and then tomorrow find a FedEx or UPS place where I am at to get her off to CA. Unfortunately I am going to have to drive 50mins away to find one of these carrriers as I am out in nowhere land at this momemt... Just alot of ocean and seaguls around me....

well.......... my mb is on its way to Gigabyte in California....

Geeeezzzzz FedEx is expensive if you want to send 2 or 3 day... to get it there by thursday (2 day) it would have cost 75.00.... by Friday (3 day) it would have cost 50.00.... So I sent it FedEx Ground.... It would have gotten there next week Monday.... BUT... since Monday is a holiday (Memorial Day) it will arrive on Tuesday... Oh well... at least it would be at the beginning of a new week... Hopefully I will get word of a new MB the following week.

Tomorrow i'm gonna try to call OCZ to see if they can help out with my psu woes....

To day I visited the Wright Brother's Memorial and Kitty Hawk's Jockey Ridge (humungus sand dunes and hand gliding area)... dang... alot of walking... whew....
