Whooah! MaximumPC you fcuking legend ! ! !

For the most part, AMD's 5xxx series of GPUs have stood up well against the competition, and that includes Nvidia's Fermi architecture. If the Sunnyvale graphics chip maker wanted to, it could probably sit on the sidelines for the rest of the year and still remain competitive.

That isn't in AMD's cards, so to speak. Citing "sources from graphics card players," Digitimes says you can expect AMD to start shipping videocards built around its next-gen GPU -- codenamed Southern Islands -- in November, with an official announcement preceding the launch a month ahead of time. This new GPU will come manufactured on a 28nm process. The original plan was to make these upcoming chips using a 32nm manufacturing process (and called Northern Islands by AMD), but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) ended up skipping its 32nm R&D and jumped straight to 28nm.

Around the same time, and perhaps even earlier, AMD is said to be cutting prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series graphics cards, both in preparation for the upcoming 6xxx series, and to fend off Fermi from chewing into its market share.

I still have my Nvid 8800GTX. But I used to go where the power was. These days,
it's just not possible (2 daughters a wife - you get the picture G.G you'll know what I'm
on about lol) but if I'd the cash, I'd love to get a hold of one of the 59xx GPU's or even more
so the 6xxx series if true....

No power play for me these days, especially just recently my base salary has just be cut by 20%. Since I'm not going to pay 400.00 or more for a 5870... maybe this new 6xxx series will bring the price down to a point that it is more in line with my liking... but on the other hand.... with recent events, the drop in price for the 5xxx series may not be enough.

Nice to see you posting again Tam, are you a gringo yet? lol

Also, this is what is wonderful about the PC world. Once the 6xxx series is out you can buy a 5xxx series for the price of expensive dirt. Patience rewards itself my friend, the longer you hold out the better you'll be in the end.

G.G. sorry to hear that out man. But judging from your real system you still can handle every game to date so whats the rush? We all have to admit that Crysis is what pushed sales on impulsive buying for GPU's. :P Crysis 2 is coming soon but it supposedly has the same system requirements as the first game.

I seriously doubt these new chips will run cheap.

Well as far as they're way ahead of Nvidia then yes expect them to be very expensive.

Lol thanks Meats! No not yet. The procedure is still in process. May take many months
yet.

Just looking at the pattern ATI's forged for us for many years of wonderful gaming it seems like the HD 6850 will kick the HD 5870 out of the water in both price/performance. But at the same time I am hoping the HD 5870's drop by more than $200 if not further 8)

I think, I'm not sure, but I think these are not going to be 28nm chips. TSMC is skipping the 32nm process tech and going straight to 28nm, but that's gonna take awhile so AMD is just gonna fab them on the existing 40nm process tech.

They better have some badass architectural improvements. I hope they're fabbed on 28nm, though. They'd probably sip power. :D

Do they ever? I don't really care. They'll be DX11 parts, like the Radeon HD 5000 series... which will probably drop in price quite a bit as a result. I smell an upgrade!!!

Not sure whether it will be TSMC 28nm, ATI have little faith in TSMC, they would prefer getting it done from Global Foundaries. It is not decided yet, but whichever company/waffer deliver good improvements/results will get the dough. My money is on Global Foundaries.

ATI's Radeon HD 6000 series based on imporved 40nm (TSMC) over HD 5000 series.
AMD's Bulldozer CPU's based on 32nm SOI with HKMG (Global Foundries)

According to reports, the new Southern Islands GPUs will feature current-generation 5-way VLIW stream processors, but will also contain the next-generation ultra-threading engine, memory controllers, caches and other parts. What we should expect from ATI with the Southern Islands is a substantial boost in performance over Evergreen, something which you would expect from a true next generation design.

Nice one Super! This's what we expect from NextGen GPU's as always. Something
substantial to look forward too. Time to start saving the pennies!!

Lol I just recently found out Old Spice sells in America. Lmao!
I think advertising standards dismisseed the Old Spice adverts, here in the UK, way back
in 1989 or something as only men in the 70's with slicked, 50's wet look would buy that
for going to the Bingo or something. I think Hai karate was better lol.

G.G. I know something you'll be great at. Every year at the Adult Entertainment expo they bring the new sex dolls with improved functions each time. So you can be the vagina designer for the doll or check if everything is done right. Easy money!

I swear these things will someday do the job. They get more advanced each year.
