Bungle Aug 28, 2010, 05:56pm EDT Report Abuse
My current laptop is at the end of its rope... I bought it in 2002, it still works fine, its just so slow that it struggles to surf the web due to its inability to run all the flash objects these days its specs are:

1.8GHz skt478 Celeron
1GB DDR 2700
ATI IGP 340 (mobile Radeon 7000)
1024x768 15" display
XP Home

I just got a promotion at work and will have to start doing alot more traveling so I need something I can take with me to keep me sane. What I would like to have is something that can do some light to medium gaming I'm not expecting 80FPS in Crysis but it would be nice to run something like Left 4 Dead or UT3 with a few of the eye candy options on at playable frame rates and maybe the odd RTS here and there. My biggest regret with the above laptop was the low resolution monitor so this time around the higher the better 1920x1080 is my target and I would like it to be fairly portable so a 15.6" screen probably the size I'm looking for.

Budget for this project is $1600 max but $1300 is more along the lines of what I'm thinking.

So far the best candidate I've seen is an iBuyPower Battalion 101 CZ-11 Ultra which can be found here:
http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Battalion_101_CZ-11_Ultra_Gaming_Laptop

If you've ever ordered from them I would like to know how they are as a company? Hows the service, did your order take forever to fill? I've never ordered from them. (not that I've had a whole lot of experience in that regard as this will be the 2nd prebuilt system i've ever bought)

Also, what should I be shooting for processor wise? Would a 2.53GHz Core i5 or a 1.73GHz Core i7 be better in this case? I don't own any Core ix based products so im not really sure how to gauge them performance wise.

Does anyone know of any better options as far as laptops? If you've been using one on a fairly regular basis what do you wish you would have done differently and what features have proven themselves invaluable?

Most laptop builders buy the parts from other suppliers such as asus/dell then assemble them. Some even get custom cases such as ibuypower (might) and digital storm.

I would just look at asus on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&...;name=ASUS

I always buy the best that i can afford (i3,i5,i7) I think anything in the "I" core would work fine for a laptop.

To tell if a business is truly going to stand up for there product, you can just look for the better business logo on there home page. But ibuy has been around for a while, i wouldn't worry about them.

What i would do different with a new laptop is to get a 7200 rpm drive or an ssd, instead of the 5400-5600 rpm. Most new laptops have bays for 2 HDD's. Also i would get a larger screen. It often has a bigger battery (more cells).

micro,

it's just a suggestion that's all.... Bungle is a big boy and will find what he likes... The only reason I suggested it is that MaximumPC thinks highly of it by giving it a #9 rating with a KickAss award with it would give it some weight. I tend to give MaximumPC credit for doing their job respectifully.

For $1,300 you could be the perhaps proud owner of a Dell Studio XPS 16!

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-xps-16/...amp;~ck=mn

2.8GHz i7
4GB DDR3 1333Mhz
5730 1GB
500GB 7200rpm hard disk
15.6" 1920x1080 WLED screen

If I had the money and needed a laptop, I would go for this one in a shot. Currently have a Dell Studio 15 (lower range model) and its great, its got the same WLED screen and its just amazing.

But then I know guys here don't like Dell so meh. Also don't get the Alienware range, they look awful and are disgustingly overpriced.

Thanks guys!

I like that Dell XPS I wish adding upgrades to it wasn't so expensive though... They want the cost of an OEM copy of win 7 pro just to upgrade to that over home and a bluray drive for that thing is 200 bucks! It does look nice though.

The ASUS laptops look pretty promising too... is there a place where you can customize them a bit before buying I would be nice to be able to select from a varitety of CPU's and upgrade the optical drive to a bluray drive (it would be nice to be able to watch a movie on a plane or something). I suppose they're probably user upgradable but I rather not pay for parts that I'm just going to rip out and replace as soon as i get it.

It does look rather nice. If you were willing to ditch graphics power a bit more, the Studio 15 is a lot less and does much of the same stuff. Radeon 5470 though :(

i like this asus
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220700

i have the ul80vt. it only has the G210 and the intel culv SU7300 but it's super portable which was one of the major reasons i bought it. the other was the up to 12h battery live.

the new ASUS U33Jc-A1 is the follow up model. both are well under $1k but i am not sure if the i3-370 paired with the nvidia G310 is even enough to play those games. it might be but i haven't tried.
according to anandtech's review it can. actually plays crysis with 40+ fps
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3832/asus-u33jc-bamboo-for-the-masses/5

both have smaller screens thou, between 13.3 and 14"
something to consider

You can either be part of the problem or be part of the solution.

mmh, what do you mean by only?
the GTS360M is the highest card right behind the GTX480M unless you go down to the GTX2xxM series.
it definitely would compete with the 5730.

better battery (9 cell). Smaller resolution, though larger screen. Also, no led, so the power consumption will be that of the others with led and a 6 cell battery. Nice with the 5870.

17" laptops are pretty cumbersome though. You could take a look at this, I'm unfamiliar with US makes so I don't know if these guys are reliable or not.

After looking at everything I'm thinking that the XPS with an upgrade to a 9 cell battery and a bluray drive is about the best option...

I don't really like the price nor the fact that it says "Dell" on it (god I can't belive I'm considering a Dell *resists gagging*) but its the closest thing to exactly what I want that I've seen...

Were I buying a desktop replacement I would agree, but for something to travel with I think a 17" is just too big.
