Under $100 GPU to replace dead X1800XT

My brother's computer is an older Athlon 64 system with an ATI X1800XT 512MB graphics card. That card just died last night and I'm looking for a new videocard for him to replace it. Problem is I am not sure what is faster then his old highend card. It is PCI-Express and we are looking for something around $100 that is faster then his X1800XT 512MB.

I have been looking at the HD4850 and Geforce GT250, both about $100. Anything better in this price range?

That is about the best in its price range. If you look through Newegg open boxed/refurbed items, sometimes you can find a GTX 260 for $150 (nvm it is out of stock)
He may find the card he wants for less that way.

The open boxed is guaranteed to work. It will just be missing some cables etc.

The GTS 250 is a GTX 9800 with more memory.

The 4850 should be about the same as a GTS 250.

EDIT:
Make sure his psu can handle the new card, or even connect to it.

8800gt, 9800gt, 9800GTX + or 4850 or 5750 is the best for the price. it will be like $10 above $100 though.

Yeah he has a X1800XT 512MB currently which has the 6-pin power connector. That thing was pretty power hungry, I'd almost venture to guess that some of these newer cards that are more powerful use less power. I think he is gonna get the XFX GTS250, which is $99 on Newegg.

Anything in that price range will take a cleaver to X1800XT performance anyhow, why not get something cheaper that will definitely work with the PSU?

I just saw the XFX GTS250 is $70 after rebate.

Whatever you get, make sure you look at the warranty provided. OpenBox/refurb often have warranty reduced to 30 days or so, and Non-DOA failures of graphics cards I've been hearing about are failing after 30 days.

You may also want to check to see if the card you're considering can be overclocked or not or if it can be cross-fired with your existing card (if your mobo has the slots for it). Either can make a real difference in the sub-$100 category these days.

edit: nevermind re: earlier 128bit comment, I just saw the XFX GTS250 is 256 bit.

Yeah, the XFX GT250 is the one he was looking at getting. Seems like the best deal around, though the $29.99 after rebate 9600GSO is also a good buy for such an older system.

I wonder how a GT240 compares to the 9600GSO (8800GS) which is $59.99 before $30 rebate?

twice the amount of stream processors only 32 fewer then the gtx260
i would consider the gt 240 even better then a 9800gt and pretty close to a gts250

My 8800GT was bottlenecked by the skt939 Athlon 64 X2 4600+ I had it paired with... Nothing over an nVidia 8800 or AMD/ATI 4830 is going to do anything for this computer, It doesn't have enough CPU to keep pace with a GTS250 let alone a Radeon 5850.
