As the 6800 seems to be a replacement for the 5700s, why the hell didn't they call them 6750 and 6770?

The 6800's are much better than 5770's, they match the 5850 and 5870.

Exactly and they're suppose to be since they're newer. But they're not better than a 5870 or 5850 so it was a stupid move to give them the 6850 and 6870 number line.

I don't think it's necessarily wrong of them, it actually kind of makes sense. Hopefully, no one will be stupid enough to buy a 5850/5870 now when you can basically get the same cards for $100 cheaper. 5850 and 5870 are virtually obsolete. It was a great move and a lot of people that couldn't afford the 58xx series cards will now be more prompt about buying the 68xx series. I personally am waiting on something even better, such as a 6890, 7xxx so that I can upgrade.

This is similar to what Nvidia did with the GTX280, no? Replaced it with the 275 and 285?

They should have called them the 6800, 6800GT, and 6800 Ultra.

If you actually read the 1st few pages of the review it explains WHY they decided to go down this road and rename the series again.

Either way the price point is well sweet for anyone looking for a new card....just need to get better drivers out there BIG TIME.

The 10.10 drivers work real nice for me, try them out? With these new releases AMD is pushing themselves far ahead of Nvidia IMO. Good job! The only thing that can really match these cards is the GTX460, not a bad buy.

not really....

the only area that the 6870 has the edge is in pricing....

the performance of the 6850/70 are less then the 5850/70 baring pricing.

so a HD6870 < HD5870

If the unknowing purchases a 6870 and expecting it to be faster than a 5870 on basis of the naming convention will be mistaken. the 5870 is faster.... but now if you add in pricing... then it is what it is... lesser price for lesser performance.

So the real replacement of the HD5870 will be the 6970 or something to the sort.

I can't really agree there man, the 6870 is only behind by 2-4fps - to me that's a tie.

Anyone who buys a 5850 or 5870 at full price now is just completely insane or unaware.

The 6850 is almost identical in performance to the 5850 as well.

Pick any game you like, they're pretty much the same cards.

Its the pricing that is making these cards KILLER.....I dont know what I am going to do for my new build. No way on earth I am getting another 5970 for crossfire.....I will sell it and get the newer tech depending on the performance TBH.

Might even get a pair of slightly lower end and get some better performance.....will have to be carefull as I am getting a 30" TFT.....that puts the cat among the pidgeons I tell ya!

Well, 2 x HD6870 should be faster than your HD5970. You could wait it out for a faster single card solution - Nvidia's 5 series, or the HD69 series.

**edit, actually looking at benches, even 2x HD6850's better a HD5970.

Considering there are ALWAYS going to be some issues with dual GPU solutions, that may be your best bet.

I was thinking about getting 2 x 6850's but I am waiting to see what else they bring out in the coming months. There's really not that many issues with Crossfire Dub, I haven't ran in to hardly anything other than a little extra noise and heat. And the 68xx cards are much better in that regard than 4870's.

I was referring to dual GPU; not dual card, solutions.

Corssfire has incredible scaling since HD5 series, and 6xxx series seems to be making that scaling even more refined.

Oh yeah, just noticed that. I'd say even from the 4xxx series from what I'm seeing. I typically get 98%+ scaling in all games except a rare few. I'm impressed with what they've done to improve the drivers this much, it actually makes Crossfire a viable upgrade option, sometimes even a better option. I would love to have 2x 6850's or 2x 6870's, I have a feeling they would work out so good!

Read reviews. IN most games, 2 x 6850's beats a HD5970 - by quite a margin in some cases, and just about always beats dual 5850's - even though in single card configs, the 5850 comes out on top more often than not.

The little silicon elves are obviously doing some serious silicon trickery at AMD. Shader heavy apps seems to favour the 6850 over the 5850, even though the 6850 has less shader processors...
