Finally have around $300 or so for a card so I was thinking 6850, 6950, GTX 570 and 6970. I'm not considering the 6870 at all since it's not much more for a 6950. What would you guys get in my position? I'm gaming at 1920x1080 and would like to max out games with filters and the like. Can I get away with just spending $200 on a 6850 to do that or do I need more?

Did you see Plug's post earlier today?
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/77216/

There have also been quite a few other threads (on HWA and other fora) discussing these newer HD and GTX cards, and multiple reviews have been identified in the threads. Try searching on some of the cards on HWA and using your fave search engine.

I also recommend going to newegg.com and reading the "Feedback" comments from people who have actually bought a given card. Experiences tend to differ depending on the manufacturer (e.g. Sapphire v. EVGA v. etc). I prefer when Feedbacks number over 100 (ideally over 200) before I start looking for trends.

I'm going to say the 6870 is currently most logical high-end card from the looks of it. It's $50 cheaper than the 6950 and can be overclocked to even higher performance. It barely loses to the 6950. They're all good deals, it's all about what you want it to do and how long you expect it to last. The 570 is a pretty killer card I have to admit, tempted to get one myself, but it seems that is out of your price range?

The 6850 will likely disappoint you at 1920x1080. The 6870 should put you over that hump. I would get the GTX570 over the 6970.

Yea since the 6950 and 6970 won't even fit in my case that makes the decision very easy. If the gtx 570 was $360 flat I may go for it but at over $420 shipped with taxes I find it not too appealing anymore. So I think I will go for the 6870 unless some price cuts happen over the holidays on the rest of em.

It's the right choice. I don't think they will be cutting the prices of the new cards for a little while unfortunately. Maybe by $10 or something. I've seen 6870's for $239 and when compared to the 6950 at $300+, it doesn't seem worth it. The GTX570 is my favorite card out right now, as it nearly is worth the price, but when you're on a budget...well you know.

Absolute GREAT time to be getting a card....maybe wait a week or so to see if prices on both side fall to be more competitive.....

If I were you I would get the 6950....then when you get the chance add another. I am not a big multi card setup guy, but the scaling on the 6950 cards is just AMAZING....better the XFIRE 6970 in most cases!

Yeah, when you have a 8800GT, any time is a good time to upgrade at this point. I doubt prices will change, but we'll see. I'd still go for the 6870 at this point.

Nice man, great card. Any game is good to test! Try Crysis? The truth is, there really isn't many good games out there right now. That card will easily handle everything with FPS left to spare. Do some testing and let us know what you think. Don't listen to SuperXP, he's just jealous he didn't get a 570! :P

I am amazed by this card I get a solid 60+ fps in Batman Arkum Asylum 1920x1080 Physx enabled on high 16x AA I'm really in disbelief but I guess you get what you pay for. Resident Evil 5 also runs unbelievable 120 fps max 105 avg min 95 1920x1080 16xAA but I guess those are unfair games to judge because they favor Nvidia. It's also very quiet for such a high end card with stock cooling, I remember my 8800 GT being loud as a vacuum. It's nice to be able to max out any game I come across and get excellent performance exactly what I wanted. Now if only Crysis and Metro 2033 get a bit cheaper on steam during this sale so I can try those out. In short if you want a gpu you can't go wrong with a GTX 570.

I would like to see you try BFBC2 if you have it and turn everything up including the sound (war tapes)... BFBC2 will definately use all four cores of that Q9550 and then your card will do the rest... Reason I ask this is because I have a Q9550 as well and would like to know what it does with a GTX570.

You went from a GTX295 to a 6870 right? Thought they were supposed to be about the same performance. I can see the 6870 being better though. That's good that you like your GTX570 Fatal, I would have gotten the same card. Actually I missed out on a boxing-day sale for an MSI GTX570 for $309, $10 gift card and 3 free games :( :( :(

Also Fatal, I don't know if you're into overclocking much, but you would get even more performance with your CPU overclocked.

damn..... that was an excellent deal... At Newegg here in the states ranges from 350~370.. 50 bucks off is great.. plus a 10 buck gift card? that's icing on the cake.... nice... three free games is nice too.... better if the games are ones that you really want to play... I'm sure at least one will be a real keeper.

well, the other thing to bear in mind is that Ive been stuck with my old 8600gts for a while, I cant really comment on its performance compared with the gtx295

Is it the first time you purchased a high-end ATI card?
