  \windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt

Hi everyone. So I have a problem that I am not sure how to fix. My friend gave me her computer that gives a windows system32 config system missing or corrupt error. I first must say that the computer is a net book. Gateway Intell Atom CPU N270 1.6 Ghz. The CD rom on the netbook is USB. So I changed the boot up options to make the HD the last boot up option for the computer and the USB CDrom as the first. I then popped in the Windows XP Professional CD to attempt to reinstall Windows. I hear the CDrom start turning, but the computer will not start up the disk and automaticly bring me right back to the screen that says \windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt. I have looked online to find ways to get around this issue, but all seem to require you to repair Windows using the CD and then go in to the registry and manually repair it while in windows, but I can not even access windows with the CD in the ROM.

If you need any information the HD is a Western Digitial WD1600BEVT-22ZCTO

Thank you in advance

Check the hard drive for errors. I always end up booting into Ubuntu since I don't know any standalone applications. Perhaps someone else can recommend a few.

It is said that when it comes to life, those who feel see it as a tragedy. Those who think see it as a comedy.

Try this step by step procedure to fix this:

Step 1 : Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD

Step 2 : At the first R=Repair option, press the R key

Step 3 : Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1

Step 4 : Enter in the administrator password when requested

Step 5 : cd \windows\system32\config

Step 6 : Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bak or ren system system.bak

Step 7 : Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software

Step 8 : Take out the CD ROM and type exit
