No sound after installing ATI 4850
 Date Written

Somebody PLEASE help me before I go insane. I don't know a lot about computers, but I figured I knew enough to install an ATI 4850 graphics card I received, and now my computer has NO sound. No winamp, no media center, no .avi's on media player, NOTHING. From reading other posts, this seems to be a common problem, but I've tried everything I've read (except for uninstalling and re-installing everything) I went into BIOS, put my default sound to "enable" as opposed to auto, went through catalyst, found nothing, went to device manager, disabled the AMD high def audio, everything else is "enabled and working properly. Tried going to sounds / audio, it gives me NO options to change anything, it's all gray (one post said "click 'only use default devices', but it won't let me click it) I downloaded catalyst, plus its "hotfix" plus dotnetfx 2.0 or whatever that is. I spent three hours on this bloody thing and i'm at the end of my rope. I got the card for free so if i can't use it, i'm not out anything, but i would REALLY like it to work...

I won't bother posting what my computer is, cause I have other upgrades i'm installing soon, so... any help with this would be HUGELY appreciated.

Need to post at least your OS. What sound output *should* be working?

How did you connect to your monitor? If you used HDMI it makes sense that the audio output is going through that instead of your speaker output.

It is a DVI to HDMI cable, but it was before on the 7950GT that I had, so... I don't know :S

sorry, OS is XP media edition, and should be REALTEK, I believe. There's a few options, but based off of other posts I see, it's realtek. And yeah, it's hooked up to My 50" plasma, but it was before with no issue

Does it give an error or does it look like the sound is playing, you just don't hear anything?

It seems to me like what likely happened is CCC overrode your audio driver some how. I would uninstall and reinstall the audio driver.

If you aren't sure what audio driver you need, try this old version of SIW to see if it can ID your motherboard and specifically your audio chipset to see what driver you need.

Yeah, see... this is where I have'nt a damn clue what I'm doing. I downloaded that SIW, found this under motherboard:

Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC.
Version: 1.03
Serial Number: MB-1234567890

Google "Asustek audio drivers XP", brought me to the site. And of course, just my luck, it gives you MULTIPLE options to punch in your model, NONE OF THEM WORKED!?!?!?! Then I checked "drivers" and "audio and video codecs" in SIW, but there's so bloody many I don't know what it is I'm looking for.

When I go to watch TV on media center it says "Audio device error, video cannot be displayed because no audio devices have bee detected. Please check that your audio device is properly installed" and when I try to play a song on winamp it says "Bad direct sound driver (of course, search does'nt come up with anything 'direct sound') Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration (which of course, it won't let me do). No error message comes up when i try to watch an .avi or .mkv on windows media player, but there's no audio, just video. I have'nt tried a game, but then, that was the point of getting this bloody card.

I just googled the error number on winamp and it showed me a video of going to services-> windows audio and clicking on "start", but it's already started (and now i realize i'd already tried this)

This is TOTALLY aggravating, but I appreciate your help so far :)

Please for the love of all that is holy, i'm BEGGING for some help here... I'm about to throw my keyboard through m TV i'm getting so aggravated. I uninstalled then re-installed Catalyst. It asked me to download microsoft net framework, which i thought i had already done, though i was'nt paying attention, it failed, but i did'nt think anything of it because the catalyst menu still did (and again now does) come up. It said if i download this fixit thing that would work, the fixit downloaded, but then the net framework STILL fails. in my device manager the ati hd audio is disabled, everything else is enabled and working properly,in bios the sound is enabled instead of on auto, i have updated drivers for my realtek audio, and like out of some nightmare, when i am in device manager and right click uninstall the amd audio, it disapears from the list, but then REAPPEARS when i restart the computer ARRRRRRGH HELP ME?!?!?!?!?

I feel your pain - you just want the (*&%^$(*& thing to work.

So we are making progress: now we know the specific problem is, your primary sound device isn't working.

In Device Manager, instead of uninstalling the AMD audio device, try disabling it. That way Windows will still detect it when you reboot but hopefully will see that you don't want to use it.

I googled your mobo model, NodusM and it looks like this is for an HP/Compaq. Does this look right?

That says you have either ALC883 or ALC888 CODEC, both of which are Realtek audio devices. Does SIW specify one or the other?

Here's a download for 883

You could also try installing this version of dot net:

That's 3.5 which (IIRC) is as up to date for XP as it gets. I am not sure that is the problem but dot net framework is generally useful to have installed.

1- Went to "run-> services.msc->Windows audio" it is already set to "started", so I stopped it, applied, then restarted it. There is nothing in services.msc realtek related that i can see, so i can't "start" it from there (see #6)

2- Went into Bios, switched it from "auto" to "enabled", booted up, nothing. Went back into Bios, disabled, auto, enabled, saved, nothing. *note, REALTEK audio does not show up in my device manager or the sounds hardware tab if BIOS is set to auto

3- I see nothing in the "Catalyst control center" regarding ANYTHING audio that the card is supposed to have.

4- Go to "control panel->sounds and audio devices->audio tab" it does not allow me to change ANYTHING. Every drop down is gray saying "no device", the box saying "use only default devices" is not clickable.

5- On start up it says "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is required to run Catalyst contol center" yet the CCC comes up fine, and framework will not download preperly. Gives error 0x643, Microsoft offers a "fixit" download that seems to do nothing, or this other LONG method. None of that seems to matter though, as Catalyst starts up fine. Running a search shows that I already have framework 2.0 and 3.5. I don't know if they're corrupted or something, but they're on my computer it would seem. Not sure how or when they got there, because on my list of windows updates, the only thing .net framework related is for 1.1

6- Go to "control panel->sounds and audio devices-> hardware tab" i click AMD HDA, disable it, then into properties, click "do not use audio features on this device" hit apply there. Click on Realtek audio, it is enabled, click "use audio features for this device" it says "device has been enabled but is not started" (something tells me THIS is the problem, but I don't know how/where to fix it) hit apply there, ("apply", not "ok"), but then in the actually "S&D harddware tab" the "apply" button is grayed out. I now notice, whereas i thought i'd turn AMD to "do not use" and REALTEK to "use" and then when i apply, exit, go back they'd be back to on & off respectively, they are either BOTH on or BOTH off, though AMD is DISABLED and REALTEK is ENABLED.

7- Going through device manager, AMD audio has a red X over it, EVERYTHING else looks fine.Clicking on realtek and updating drivers says, basically, it's up to date, there's nothing better available.

8- I see nothing in SIW "audio and video codecs" that is REALTEK related, though i do see "AMD high def audio device". Under drivers i find realtek high definition audio driver, it's status is "running" with it's start as "demand start". HDAUDbus is the same (a microsoft driver), then there is an Ati (not ATI) and an AMD high def audio function driver, those are both "status stopped, demand start". trying to right click -> start either of them does nothing.

9- Attempted to run "driver boost" which is supposed to be some miracle program that fixes all, but of course, rather than actually WORK, it keeps getting "interrupted".

10- the only "ALC" anything i see is alc78u2 and alc78xx, they're both stopped and disabled, but have no description or path to them.

Man it took me a long time to do and write all that lol. Seriously, i'm losing my mind. But i seriously appreciate your efforts.

Hey man, just wanted to let you know that I got it all working, finally. I noticed, my realtek audio was'nt showing up on my list of removable programs (i was going to uninstall the catalyst), but as i saw it every where else i was like "that's strange" so i did a full system recovery, had to re-install a ton of stuff, but all is well now. popping in a new prcessor, some ram and a bigger hard drive this weekend (professionally this time lol), so yeah, should be good to go soon. Thanks so much for your help though. I appreciate you taking the time to try to help me. take care
