  Computer internet Performace intermittent.
 Date Written
Paul Roberts Apr 04, 2013, 03:20pm EDT Report Abuse
My story.....Intermittent -unpredictable Internet performace.

Recently, I was confused, one time I would login to my home computer I would have good performace on the internet, the next time, I would not be able to run on line video especially on Fandago, without the web video buffering, and waiting for the internet connection to catch up. I am on a 15MB line.

This would come and go, and would run fine 80% of the time. The other 20% would drive me nuts trying to figure out why? I would scan for viruses, registry compact, register clean, even defragged the HD. All helped, but the problem kept comming back. GGGrrrrrr! Keep in mind, this started off with subtle performance loss and kept getting worse over a year.

Eventually, The Router stopped working. I would have intermittent performance directly connected to the modem. I could reboot, all would be fine, and eventually would slow down. I was always able to get Google to load. I had an IP Address at the Modem, DNS,Gateway, but SSSLLLLOOOWWWW! The Xfinity Speed checked bad and was .9mbs-1.1mbs
I had a painful experience with a 45 minute hold with Comcast just to get answering service! Shezzzzz I will stop talking about that. Comcast told me the router was bad...NOT!!!!
A new router did the same thing, and did not work.

OK, So now what? I replaceed the Ethernet card in the PC and BOOM! Fast internet, the router worked, the phones worked, Everything was great! I would try that before anything else. An Ethernet card is 30 bucks. If you want a higher performance card, install a server Ethernet card with a bigger buffer, which may help.

Might be...

Within the past week there have been multiple reports of worldwide internet bandwidth reduction attacks...affecting multiple domains/service providers. Common symptom was unpredictably reduced performance at unpredictable times. Reports state the effects will be seen for some time to come despite efforts to stop it.

Thank you very much for your comment. I should have been more clear. The network card did fix the problem. I am hoping to save other people from going through the greef I went through. This is a great forum!

Sorry to hear about your plight. If this is happening only in this week, then it can be due to an ongoing internet cable outage, which will solve by this weekend, where an undersea cable was cut.

But if this happening from over a year or so, then there is a possibility that your LAN card might be causing the trouble. There is also a possibility that somewhere in the line a hairline crack has appeared which is leading to data loss and as a result inconsistent internet performance.

My advice is to ask your ISP to check the line and if possible relay it. In general, they come up with used cable for installing a new connection set up and your experience gets repeated in many cases.

Sometimes if a malware resides in your PC, it can also influence your PC or internet performance.

So, check it out. If your problem is solved, which i could see in your latest post, then thanks for sharing your experience.

Over the last month, I've had similar derogations in service and lack of service.
I was loosing internet connection in the following manner.
After a couple of hours of no internet access I could not access internet sites on any port but:
1. I could resolve DNS names.
2. I could ping the addresses.
3. I could telnet to the ports ( 80,8080,443,etc.), but was not able to process http/https/HTML.
4. I'd reboot the computer and re-acquire connectivity at normal speeds.

I have a two Ethernet port MB so switched to the secondary port and everything has been copasetic since statically assigning the IP address to it.

Maybe it's that new "improved" routing of everything via Utah?
